What is there to do in Mile End and the surrounding area?
Mile End is an exciting area on the Regent’s Canal with a buzzing student community. Mile End is known as a melting pot, enjoy a mix of traditional East End pubs, independent shops, street markets, stalls and food from across the globe. Scape Mile End looks out over Regent’s Canal, which acts as a picturesque waterway. Travel north up the canal to visit Victoria Park or south to discover Limehouse. If you’re feeling cultural it is worth visiting Matt’s Gallery, which showcases contemporary art exhibitions. Have you ever tried rock climbing? Mile End climbing wall is known as a bit of an institution. Try your hand at bouldering or rope climbing.
Mile End is surrounded by popular areas like Hackney, Bethnal Green and Whitechapel, with lots to do nearby. Just north of our accommodation, you’ll find yourself in the borough of Hackney. Trendy shops, bars and green spaces such as Victoria Park can be found here, and don’t forget about the floating boat bar on the River Lee, Barge East. Another nearby area to visit is Bethnal Green, and a must see there is the Columbia Road flower market. Occurring every Sunday, it’s one of the most famous markets for flowers, plants and small gifts. Bethnal Green also offers plenty of bars and places to eat, as well as its neighbouring area, Bow, just east of Mile End. Shoreditch and Whitechapel are also a short journey away, offering quirky bars and a buzzing nightlife. It is also worth exploring Brick Lane, go for a curry in one of the many curry houses, hit the vintage shops, explore Truman Brewery Market and stroll past the vibrant street art in the area.
What are the travel connections like?
Living in our accommodation means you’ll be well connected to all parts of the capital, with Mile End tube station just a few minutes' walk down the road from Scape. Hop on the central line westbound, and you’ll arrive in the centre of the city within 15 minutes. Stay on the tube, and you’ll end up on the west side of the city. Buses are frequent in the area too, with bus stops located right outside our accommodation. If you prefer the exercise, there’s a cycle lane right outside the building, too that heads towards central or walking to nearby areas is easy as well!
Studying from Stratford? UCL east and University of East London campuses are easily accessible. Stratford is a 5 minute journey on the central line eastbound.
How easy is the commute to university?
If you’re a QMUL student, Scape Mile End is on Queen Mary campus. If you’re looking to rent a student room in Mile End in close proximity to campus, you couldn’t be closer living at Scape. The location is perfect, within walking distance of the whole of campus. Never be late for a lecture again. You’ll be just minutes away from your lectures and all your campus needs
If you’re based out of UCL East or London College of Fashion, the Stratford campuses are also easy to get to on public transport. Transportation to UCL East will be easy, hop on a bus or the central line and be on campus within 30 minutes. With great transport links to other parts of the city too. At Scape Mile End you are within easy access of other universities. City University is just a short bike ride or tube journey away, with UCL main campus nearby too. And with Mile End tube station just down the road, exploring other parts of the capital is quick and easy.
Where are the best places to eat out in the neighbourhood?
Mile End is buzzing with a host of delicious food choices to cater to all food lovers. Around the area, you can find a range of independent cafés and restaurants as well as more well-known eateries. Places like Nandos and Wetherspoons are just a few minutes' walk down the road, or if you fancy something more local, check out independent places such as The Kitchen or The Pizza Room. Spitalfields market is just round the corner, offering unique cuisines in a market setting. Or venture to Westfield, Stratford City for more food venues inside the capital's largest shopping mall!
Brick Lane with its curry houses is also nearby. Or a pint and pizza from one of Hackney’s independent breweries on a sunny day is a must!
Are there any green spaces nearby?
If you’re looking for areas to relax, de-stress and take in the sight of nature, Mile End and the East End have a host of spots. With our student residence right next to Regents Canal, you can venture up the water way for a lovely scenic walk, straight from your accommodation.
In Mile End and nearby, you’ll find some beautiful areas of nature to visit. When you want time away from studying, or simply want a breath of fresh air, Mile End Park is just round the corner and spans some 79 acres, with vast greenery to take in amidst a busy urban area. Running alongside Mile End Park is the Regent’s Canal and is a great walking route to get some exercise in. Going up the canal will take you to another big area of green space, just a 20-minute walk away – Victoria Park. And if you fancy a longer venture, head East at the park and you’ll eventually get to the Olympic Park in Stratford. This area was transformed for the 2012 Olympic Games and is now a great spot for relaxing and socialising outdoors.
Where can I go shopping in Mile End?
Looking for local charm? Find Roman Road tucked away en route to Victoria Park, a real gem of a high street with a good mix of independent shops and regular street markets. If you’re looking for a unique bargain travel to East End Vintage Clothes where you pay by the kilo and fill up your bags with weird and wonderful finds.
The main area for shopping is only one stop away on the tube – Westfield Stratford City. Westfield hosts a range of stores for all your shopping needs, from clothing stores to update your wardrobe, to jewellery shops and grocery shopping. Notable stores at Westfield include H&M, Apple, Boots and more. You also have easy access to more retail shops in the centre of town, with Oxford Street a short ride away. Closer to Scape Mile End, you have a Sainsbury’s just round the corner where you can do your weekly grocery shop. Further down the road is a big Asda, as well as a range of independent stores on Mile End Road.
Where can I go for a night out in East London?
The best of East London is just a few minutes away from E1. Shoreditch, Brick Lane and Spitalfields are all in zone 1 and only a short bus ride away. All areas are famous for their cafes, galleries, fashion, restaurants and nightlife.
With Mile End being in such a well-connected area, there’s always something to do nearby or a short journey away. A popular spot with students is Genesis Cinema, showcasing the latest blockbuster and independent films in a quirky setting. Student discounts mean tickets are from as little as £5.50! Around the area you’ll also find a range of bars, including The Greedy Cow and The Half Moon pub. Enjoy a night of laughs seeing up and coming comedians at Backyard Comedy Club. If you fancy somewhere else, why not take a short trip to the nearby Shoreditch where there’s a whole host of bars and clubs for a great night out. Otherwise, hop on the Central Line at Mile End tube station and venture into the centre of the capital in 15-minutes!

What communal spaces are there at Scape?
There are communal spaces to bring everyone together as well as secluded spots for you to relax, recharge and study. Our communal areas include, spacious lounges, games area, communal kitchen and bar, cinema room, fully equipped gym, study booths, pods and meeting rooms with fast wifi throughout. Enjoy views across Regent's canal. There is also a laundry room (using circuit laundry machines), secure bike storage and a reception team available 24/7. All floors can be accessed via stairs or lifts.

Do you host regular events?
Yes, we host weekly events which are a mix of on-site events and activities around the city. From Friday night hangouts to Superbowl screening, swap shops, and getting competitive with go-karting. Most events are free to join. For some off-site events there are limited spaces and there is a low-price set to secure your spot.
