Styling your student room

Moving to uni is a big deal. After spending all of your life surrounded by home comforts, you're going to want to make your student room feel like home as quickly as possible.

Styling Your Student Room on a Budget

Moving to uni is a big deal. After spending all your life surrounded by home comforts, the idea of an empty student room might sound a little intimidating. Don’t worry, we have loads of fun interior décor ideas to help you make the space your own. Sure, there are some basic rules you’ll have to follow in student accommodation, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still have the aesthetic room of your dreams!

Top 6 décor tips for your student room

Student living doesn’t need to be all dorm rooms and dirty halls of residence. At Scape, you’ll have your own comfy double bed, study desk and ample storage. You’ll also have access to next-level amenities so you can gym, study and hangout any time of day. Whether you’re living with friends or have a studio all to yourself, here are 6 budget-friendly ways to style your uni room.

1. Add some plants

Plants are the easiest way to breathe life into a room. If you don’t fancy yourself a plant parent, you can always opt for low-maintenance plants like cacti, aloe vera and snake plants as they’re almost unkillable. Otherwise, artificial plants are the way to go! They’ll transform your student room instantly and often look pretty realistic. Whether you’re after a large plant for the corner of your room or small potted plants to place on your study desk, there’s lots of ways to get creative.

2. Add mood lighting

There’s nothing like some mood lighting to make your student room feel cosy. A desk lamp or a bedside lamp can add a lot. At Scape, your room may already have these (which is great for late night revision). You can also consider adding some LED string lights or fairy lights around your windows and desk to create a relaxed, comfy atmosphere. Or, add a fun neon sign to your shelf for a pop of colour and personality if that’s more your style.

3. Use rugs and cushions

Make the most of your floorspace by adding a rug. Roll it out and enjoy the soft, plush feel underneath your feet. For a more aesthetic bedroom, add some cushions to your bed. Don’t be afraid to mix and match different sizes and patterns – the layered look is in. If you have a window seat, throw in some cushions here too and just like that you’ve got yourself a cosy reading nook. You’ll be the one all your friends turn to for uni room inspiration.

4. Get some photo frames

Keep your loved ones close even while you’re away at uni. You can put up photo frames on your desk or shelf or add polaroids and printed pictures to a pinboard. There’s lots of ways to display your favourite memories without damaging your walls. It’s just what you need to make your student room feel like home away from home.

5. Go with a colour scheme

Let the colour in your room take the lead or go rogue and add your own splash of colour, it’s up to you. Bedding is the easiest way to decorate your student room. Layer textured blankets and throws over your duvet or fold a throw over your chair. Not only will it up the aesthetic of your room, but it’ll also come in handy in the chilly winter months. If you’re homesick at uni, you can replicate your colour scheme from back home and add familiar scents for extra comfort.

6. Make it personal

Whether it’s your favourite mug, photos of your dog, travel souvenirs or beloved books, surrounding yourself with things that make you smile will help you relax after a long day at uni. Plus it can add the perfect decorative touch to your uni room.

Style your student room and make it cosy – just remember to keep your deposit safe and avoid sticking things to your walls that could damage it, like hooks, shelves, or Blu Tack.
